South- and west-facing walls, and darker-colored siding especially, take the brunt of it, since dark colors absorb more heat and degrade faster than lighter shades. A few things to watch for: a powdery residue on your hand after running it across the siding or stucco, an obvious color difference between a sun-exposed wall and one that’s shaded by trees or a neighboring structure, siding that feels stiffer or cracks more easily than it used to, and stucco with a patchy, bleached-out look in direct sun. None of these are emergencies on their own, but they’re a sign the material’s protective life is winding down.
What Actually Helps
You can’t change how much sun a wall gets, but material choice makes a real difference. James Hardie fiber cement siding is baked with a factory finish engineered to resist UV fading far longer than standard vinyl, which is worth considering on south- and west-facing elevations that take the worst of the exposure. For stucco, a fresh elastomeric recoat can restore UV protection and flexibility without a full tear-off, as long as the substrate underneath is still sound.
